No tanks, no platforms, no undersea cables
Renewable energies are already a common-sense alternative for island dwellers who get their by ocean freight. And not just for ecological reasons.
Our island test bay in Berlin
To lay the technological foundation for providing clean energy for islands with several thousand inhabitants, we have constructed a test bay that simulates energy supply to a full-scale (1:1) island with 1,500 inhabitants. We can use the findings from the simulations for larger islands.
The most important components of the test bay are 1-megawatt sodium-sulphur large batteries, an inverter system, and an energy management system. There are also facilities that can simulate wind input. The test bay can either simulate a solar power station or work with solar electricity from solar collectors on the roof of the neigh-boring building. It also demonstrates grid loads and grid behavior.
That is how we are developing concepts for grid control and energy management to operate stable grids with up to 100 percent wind and solar energy – in every region of the world.
